Read to Grow is held each July here at St. Thomas church. The camp serves students from Zachary Taylor Elementary who need some extra help with reading skills. The program, which started in 2012 as "St. Thomas Reading Camp" underwent some improvements to the curriculum a few years ago. At that time, a new logo was developed and the name was changed to "Read to Grow."
Teachers at Zachary Taylor Elementary recommend students to the reading camp. Each year about 10 - 12 students take part. Through games, reading exercises, group study, and one-on-one tutoring, the students improve their reading skills and get prepared for the school year ahead.
The camp day typically lasts from 8 am until 4 pm, and the student and teacher lunches are prepared by various volunteers, including chefs from local restaurants.
Many volunteers are needed to help make each camp experience a success. Each year we need teachers/tutors, cooks, drivers for field trips, and Junior Counselors (students in 6th grade or above.)
